The Kings Gambit

1. e4  e5
2. f4  exf4
(Var 1: Kings Knight Gambit)
3.  Nf3 Be7
the oldest move, 3… - g5, has regained much of its popularity recently, but it requires much more book knowledge.
4. Bc4
White needs to make room for his King, in view of the threatening Bh4+. Other possible moves:
- 4. d4 d5 5. e5 g5, or 5. exd5 Bh4+ 6. Ke2 Bf6
- 4. Nc3 Bh4+  5. Ke2 d6 6. d4 Bg4 7. Bxf4 Nf6 8. h3 Nh5! or 8. g3 Nh5!
- 4. Be2 Nf6 (Now, Bh4+  5. Kf1 is not as strong, because black will have to lose time retreating his Bishop, while the white King is relatively save)             5. d3 d5 6. e5 Ng4 7. Bxf4 f6 8. d4 0-0 9. 0-0 fxe5 10. Nxe5 Nxe5 11. Bxe5
    4. ….-  Nf6!?

Diagram 1: the position after 4. ..- Nf6

(diagram 1)
Now, white has two possible continuations:  5. e5 (var 1.1) or 5. Nc3 (var 1.2)
5. Qe2 and 5. d3 are strongly answered by 5. .. - d5.

Diagram 1I: the position after 12. ..- Nf5

Var 1.1: 5. e5
5. e5   Ng4
This move is possible, because the Knight cannot be chased away. For instance: 6. h3 Bh4+ 7. Kf1 Nf2 8. Qe1 Nxh1  9. Qxh4 Ng3+

6.Nc3 d6
7.d4 dxe5
8.dxe5 Qxd1+
9.Nxd1 Be6
10.Bxe6 fxe6
11.h3 Nh6
12.Bxf4 Nf5

Diagram 2
The position is about equal.

Diagram III Position after 5. … - Nxe4

Var 1.2 5. Nc3
1. e4  e5
2. f4  exf4
3. Nf3 Be7
4. Bc4 Nf6
5. Nc3 Nxe4
6. 0-0
-   6 Ne5 looks strong, but is refuted  by        6. Ng5 7. d4 d6 8. Nd3 f3 9. gf3 Nh3 10. Be3 0-0
-
6. Ne4 d5 is no good for white either: 7. Bd3 dxe4 8. Bxe4 f5 9. Bd3 Qd6 10. Qe2 Nc6
-
6. Bxf7+ Kxf7 8. Ne5+ Kg8 9. Nxe4 Bh4+ 10. g3 Qe7 is also a good line for black

Diagram IV Position after 9. Nc6

6.  …  Nf6
7. d4 d5
8. Bd3 0-0
9. Bxf4 Nc6

White doesn't have enough compensation for the sacked pawn

Diagram I: The position after 3. ..--Nf6

Var 2: The Kings Bishop Gambit
1. e4  e5
2. f4 exf4
3. Bc4 Nf6
diagram 1
The best line for black. It's wise in this line too to postpone possible checks at h4.
4.  Nc3
4. e5 d5  5. Bb3  Ne4 6. Nf3 Bg4 7. 0-0 Nc6 is good for black
4. d4  Nxe4  5. Bxf7+  Kxf7  6. Qh5+ g6 7.  Qd5+ Kg7  8. Qxe4 Bb4+ and black is much better
4. Nc3 c6 A strong suggestion from Bogoljubov

Diagram II: The position after 4.. ..--c6

Diagram II
White has now several possibilities, but none of them is leading to an advantage:
5.  e5  d5 6. exf6 dxc4 7. fxg7 Bxg7 8. Nf3 0-0  and Black is ok. His extra pawn isn't worth much, but he can develop quickly, and his pieces are very active
5. d3 Bb4 6. Bf4 d5 7. exd5 Nxd5 is about even
5. Nf3 b5  6. Bb3 b4 followed by  7. … - Nxe4, and black is better
5. Qe2 Bb4  6. e5 0-0, and the position is sharp, but slightly better for black
5. d4 Bb4 6. Qf3 d5 7. exd5 0-0 8. Ne2 cxd5 9. Bd3 Bg4 10. Qxf4 Bxe2 11. Kxe2 Nc6  12. Be3 Re8
5. Bb3 d5 6. exd5 cxd5
  a: 7. Nf3 Bd6 8. 0-0 0-0  9. d4 Nc6 10. Nxd5 Nxd5 11. Bxd5 g5
  b: 7. d4 Bd6 8. Nge2 0-0 9. 0-0 10. Nxd5 Nc6 11. c3 Nxd5 12. Bxd5 Ne7 13. Be4 f5.
  5.Qf3  (now black can grab the initiative with a pawn sac.)5. Qf3 d5 6.exd5 Bd6
a. 7.Nge2 Bg4 8.Qd3 0-0  and despite his weakened pawn structure black is clearly better.
b. 7. d4 0-0 8.dxc6 Bg4 9.Qf2 Nxc6
c. 7. d3 Bg4 8. Qf2 0-0 9.dxc6 Nxc6 10. Bxf4 Re8+ 11.Kf1 Bxf4 12. Qxf4 Re5 and black has more then enough compensation for his pawn. (see diagram III)
